Learning How to Lead Out

Yesterday I was riding after work with my husband, who is is a bike racer. I was trying to get a good time on a Strava segment, and he told me he would lead me out on an uphill sprint. Since I’d never had a lead out before he explained that he would ride at an even tempo up half the hill, then look over his shoulder for traffic, then gesture me with his elbow so I could sprint for the top. The most important thing, he told stressed, was communication. Which side would I pass on? Was there any traffic behind me? It was important that we had a solid plan going in.

Talking about Lead Outs made me think about the Cycling House’s Core Values. One of them is Communication. Within our little company we really try to communicate really well–with one another and with our clients. When everyone understands what’s going on things just go better…and that’s how Strava KOM’s get conquered.
