Ian Mallams

As soon as the training wheels came off (maybe even before), Ian was ripping laps around the trails around his home catching air off roots and rocks. When the seasons changed these same trails were trodden by a pair of cross country skis over snowy crystals. Excursions became more rugged and travel more extensive as Ian moved into the teenage years. Although he thoroughly enjoyed a medley of sports including cycling, running, soccer and mountaineering Ian chose to take his cross country skiing into the collegiate level. Five years(yes five, he loved it) at the University of Colorado earned him team captain status and two NCAA team national championships. Deciding he wanted to go out on top, Ian decided to call it a ski racing career and take up a different sport. This experience all added up to prep Ian for his journey, to begin with The Cycling House.

With a strong background in cycling and running from his ski cross-training, Ian decided to pick up triathlon and had immediate success. It was soon after that he landed with The Cycling House and wheel were up to Tucson, Arizona. Loving the lifestyle, Ian pursued his triathlon drive and quickly had success at Ironman 70.3 races at the Age Group level and raced the World Championship race in his first year. Ian has continued to race triathlon at various distances over the last three years and well as some trail running races. Currently, he has taken a step back from high caliber triathlon racing to focus on his additional endeavors for running and climbing.

What is the best thing about working at The Cycling House?

The positive atmosphere, world-class riding locations, and the diverse and challenging yet highly rewarding environment are my top reasons to work at The Cycling House. Oh ya, and you get to work with your friends too!

Do you have a favorite ride?

St. Mary to East Glacier during the Glacier Loop - Steals the show in the Glacier Loop, climbs four passes, none of which are too long and winds in and out of the Glacier’s majestic front range.

What is the most memorable day you’ve ever had on the bike?

On a fine outing in Mallorca, Spain, fellow guides, Brendan, Drew and I rode all the backroads and visited as many of the ports as possible in the Traumontana mountain ranges. Highlights included a broken chain (or two), towing Brendan with a rope along the busy streets of Palma, 3 km of 18-24% grades roads, mid-rid cervezas (twice), the prized competition of sprinting for every col or town sign and extreme bonking!
