Sam Vickery

I was born and raised in Colorado and am based in Austin, TX. My life has revolved around bikes for as long as I can remember! My dad got me into BMX racing when I was 5 years old, and I haven’t looked back. That early spark eventually led me to racing nearly every discipline I could get my hands on, Cyclocross and Road to Cross-Country and Downhill Mountain Biking. I attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO, where I rode for the cycling team and truly fell in love with all types of riding. I love bikes in every form! My experience leading cycling trips and coaching began with Durango DEVO, a junior development program where I coached the high school NICA team, helping young riders build skills, confidence, and community through bikes. Whether racing or just out exploring, I’ve built a life around seeing the world by bike—and I’m passionate about sharing that experience with others. You’ll find me watching motorsports, birdwatching, or learning how to two-step when I’m not riding.

What is the best thing about working at The Cycling House?

The best part about working at the cycling house is getting to share adventures with so many people! TCH has so many great locations and being able to facilitate adventures for cyclists of all abilities is such a fulfilling experience.

What is your favorite ride?

My favorite ride has to be the Coal Creek trail tucked away in the high alpine of my long-time home in Durango. There are not many places where you can do a sub-2-hour mountain bike ride above treeline. This trail rides best at golden hour with a beverage post ride!

What is the most memorable day you've ever had on the bike?

My most memorable day on a bike came back in 2020. With the world shut down due to covid, I set my sights on a long time dream of completing the Colorado Trail - a 550 mile point to point mountain bike route from Denver, CO to Durango, CO. On the 8th day of our bikepacking journey across the state, we entered the Coney Cateract section of the trail, most known for the epic scenery but also for the brutal hike-a-bikes as you pick your way towards the town of Silverton. With the goal of reaching the resupply point by the end of the day, we pushed on through the most epic alpine sunset and eventually into the night, finishing our ride at 10 pm. The beauty of that sunset still has never been matched to this day!
