I Got into a conversation last night with a friend about Sven Nys riding Trek Bikes.  Both of us un-educated on the decision voiced our “selling out” view points.  I thought about it more this morning and did some research.

Sven is the best cross racer ever.  He’s everything you want in a pro cyclocrosser.  First off, he’s the hardman that we all pretend to be.  From all accounts, even angry competitors post race, Nys is literally a badger.  He doesn’t give up when he’s back, and he knows all he needs is the tire to slip 1mm in front of his competitor.  Youtube Sven Nys if you don’t know what I’m talking about.  The second part of Nys appeal is his access to fans.  Whether it’s Geoff Proctor’s book “Behind the Stare,” racing stateside, or granting everyone and their mother an interview.  The final part of the equation is his desire to the develop the sport.  Serving on the UCI Cross Commission, starting the training center…..and finally switching to Trek Bikes.

Yes, for pure cross racers you can’t imagine someone switching from your Grandpa’s Colnago to Armstrong’s Trek.  However, I believe it’s part of Nys bigger plan to take to the sport global.  If you want to learn more about the nuts and bolts of the deal and how it went down, check out CX Magazine’s Article.
