Skiing with the Garmin Edge

While most folks are starting to give up on winter, I’m still holding out.

The first nordic race of the season was cancelled due to the lack of snow.  Instead of jumping on the winter cycling bandwagon I decided to take my new Garmin to the mountains and force some winter recreation.  We decided to try a new route 10 miles north of Seeley Lake, MT.  http://connect.garmin.com/course/419024

Looking at the Swan Mountains and the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Basically the Garmin 705 lets you create your course on the computer, then upload it to your handheld device.

After my adventure I thought about the pros and cons of using the Garmin Edge 701 for skiing:

PROS

-knowing distance, elevation, and temperature was helpful with route finding and safety

-having the ability to create a route with Google Earth, Google Maps, Garmin Connect or ArcGIS and then upload it to the Garmin

-checking out stats at the end of the day, total “vert” as my friend Phil calls it

CONS

-with route finding it’s a must to have the topo chip added (extra $89)

-I can’t figure out a way to compare my created route with my actual route

-no easy way to carry it, need a belt strap

Reaching back to pull out the Garmin. Without a belt holder I had nowhere to put it.
