Geoff Proctor started the Euro Cross Camp in 2003. The idea was to improve USA Cyclocross. Like most things the development takes time. Over the last couple seasons we are starting to see real progression. It started with Jonathan Page and Danny Summerhill both taking 2nd at the 2007 Cross Worlds. However this season is getting me the most excited for the Euro Cross Camp. Zach McDonald has become a regular threat in the U23 category. As has Seattle’s Logan Owen in the junior category. In the elite’s Katie Compton continues to be a top 3 rider in the world. On the men’s side Jeremy Powers is showing real signs of competing with the top ten on a regular basis. 7th in the Czech World Cup this season and full domination of the domestic scene have people clammering on a top 5 ride at Worlds.
There are lots of Montana ties with Euro Cross Camp. Tom Robertson heads to Belgium with the gang and documents the whole process with his fabulous photography. Dave Hartman of Hellgate Cyclery is one of the go to mechanics for camp. Geoff is from Helena, MT which rounds out the MT vibe.
If you haven’t read Geoff’s new book, I highly recommend it. Behind the Stare, is a great look at what it takes to be a Pro Cyclocrosser and the struggles of Americans trying to make the jump.
