I was always an athletic, adventurous kid growing up in California, but definitely did not grow up in the world of endurance sports. I actually used to hate running and regularly fell off my bike riding to school! My life revolved around baseball and was filled with training for that until my junior year of college. When I was younger, I would’ve never believed so much of my life would be influenced by cycling and travel. After my college baseball career was over, I caught the bug for both cycling and travel. I studied abroad in London for a full year and fell in love with all aspects of travel; I loved experiencing the new cultures, trying new foods, getting out of my comfort zone, and making so many friends along the way. While studying abroad and traveling was something I always wanted to do, I started cycling almost by accident. Shortly after retiring from baseball, I really missed having something to train for; lucky for me, I happened to live right across the street from a bike shop. I bought a bike, joined group rides, and even did a few races my first year on the bike. I grew to really enjoy the social aspect of cycling and how I could push myself when I wanted to or just take it easy and ride to a coffee shop with some friends, taking in the sights along the way.
Upon graduating from college, I started my journey as a cycling guide the very next day. I’ve been lucky enough to lead over 100 trips all over the world from the US, to Europe, and even a winter season leading trips in Vietnam and India. I am beyond grateful for what cycling and travel has done for my life and my favorite thing is introducing other people to how magical seeing a beautiful place from the seat of a bicycle with great people around you can be.
What is the best thing about working at The Cycling House?
I seriously could not draw up a better place to work than TCH. If I had to pick one thing, it would be the authenticity and positive attitude of every single person I've had the pleasure of meeting and getting to work with. Everyone at TCH loves working here and goes out of their way to make each other feel welcome and supported both on and off our trips. Whether it's someone's first day on the job or it's someone who's been working here since the very beginning, each member of the team is willing to do anything to support each other and that has been incredibly special to be a part of.
Do you have a favorite ride?
Like most people, my favorite ride changes all the time! The island of Hvar in Croatia is absolutely stunning, has amazing coffee and gelato around every corner, and even smells like lavender for most of the ride! Either there or Mt Lemmon in Tucson on a clear, sunny day are pretty tough to beat.
What is the most memorable day you've ever had on the bike?
While working in India, my co-guides and I had a few days off over Diwali, a very important holiday in India often celebrated with fireworks and light displays. We wanted to pick up some fireworks, so we took our bikes into the town of Jodhpur. We rode up to a shop who's owner lived right above it in the same building. He invited us up into his home, introduced us to his family, and even taught us how to make authentic chai in his kitchen.
