Ready for an epic backcountry gravel adventure? Join us in Montana, where we’ll show you our favorite routes based on 20-plus years of pedaling around Big Sky Country. Our home base for the week is the Cliff Ranch in Ovando, just 45 minutes from downtown Missoula. We’ll ride on primarily double-track dirt roads, searching for that famous champagne gravel. We’ll plunge down fun mountain descents and muscle up challenging climbs along the way. This camp includes riding sections of the Great Divide, an over-3,000-mile route that stretches from Canada to Mexico. Expect stunning scenery, serene roads and perfectly excellent riding conditions. To top it all off, a Cycling House chef will prepare you a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Ride the Divide
We begin the morning with a scenic 45-minute shuttle to Seeley Lake, where today’s ride rolls into the heart of the stunning Seeley-Swan Valley along sections of the iconic Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. Many Great Divide riders consider this stretch the most beautiful portion of the entire 2,600-mile journey from Canada to Mexico, and it’s easy to see why. Quiet gravel roads, sweeping valley views, and endless mountain scenery define today’s adventure.
Towering above the valley are the spectacular Mission Mountains, home to the first Tribal Wilderness designated in the United States. This rugged range is also home to McDonald Glacier, the only remaining glacier in the Missions. The surrounding landscape is part of the Crown of the Continent, an immense interconnected ecosystem stretching from Montana into Canada and considered one of the most intact natural ecosystems left in the world. Thanks to this protected wilderness, the region supports an incredible abundance of wildlife, including elk, moose, black bears, grizzlies, wolves, and countless bird species.
For riders looking for an extra challenge, there is an optional 7-mile singletrack section along the Swan Crest Trail, offering a fun and rewarding taste of Montana trail riding. Whether you choose the gravel route or add in the singletrack, every option delivers spectacular scenery and some of the finest riding on Montana’s backroads.

Big Sky Country Loop
Today’s route travels through the historic Nevada and Ogden Valleys, landscapes deeply rooted in Montana ranching history and conservation. Much of this land has been carefully protected through partnerships between working ranches, conservation groups, and wildlife organizations dedicated to preserving the valley’s natural beauty and ecological importance for future generations.
Along the way, we’ll pass through areas connected to the renowned Mannix Ranch, a longtime Montana cattle operation recognized for balancing sustainable ranching with large-scale conservation efforts. The ranch has played an important role in protecting critical wildlife habitat throughout the Blackfoot watershed while continuing the region’s ranching traditions.
This valley is also an important habitat for trumpeter swans, the largest native waterfowl species in North America. Once pushed to the brink of extinction, trumpeter swans have made a remarkable recovery thanks to extensive habitat preservation and wetland conservation efforts throughout western Montana. Keep an eye out for these majestic birds gliding across ponds and wetlands as we ride through the valley.
Surrounded by the rivers, grasslands, forests, and mountains of the greater Blackfoot watershed, today’s ride offers not only incredible gravel riding, but also a deeper connection to the landscapes, wildlife, and conservation history that make this corner of Montana so special.

Nevada Ogden Mountain
Our final day takes us on a beautiful point-to-point ride through the historic Nevada and Ogden Valleys toward the small ranching town of Helmville. It’s the perfect way to wrap up the week, and from the high point of the ride, we’ll be able to look out across many of the landscapes and routes we’ve explored throughout the trip.
This region was shaped by the Homestead Act of 1862, which brought many Irish immigrant families west to establish ranches and build new lives in the Blackfoot Valley. That heritage still defines the area today, from the working cattle ranches to the welcoming small-town culture found in Helmville’s historic family-owned bar, a longtime gathering place for locals and travelers alike. They even serve Guinness on draught as an homage to their Irish roots.
The climb up Nevada Ogden Mountain is well worth the effort, rewarding us with panoramic views and a fun, fast descent into the valley below. We finish the day with a picnic lunch along the scenic Blackfoot River before shuttling home, the perfect ending to an unforgettable Montana adventure.

BIKE OPTIONS
Rent A Bike
Traveling through the airport with a bike—and paying for it to fly—is not everyone’s idea of a fun way to start a vacation. Fortunately, we offer high-quality, full carbon bikes on all of our trips across the United States and Europe. Want to just show up and ride? Just bring your shoes, pedals, helmet, and saddle (if you want), and rent one of ours.
Bring Your Own
Your bike is yours—we get it. Bringing your own bike has obvious advantages in terms of individual comfort. Before your trip, we suggest getting a tune-up at your local bike shop so it’s ready to roll for your week of riding. Once you arrive, we’ll be sure to have our mechanics build it and help with any necessary tweaks. Check out some helpful resources here:
Skip The Bike
If you or your travel partner want to enjoy the trip and explore a new destination without a bike, drop us a line and we’ll discuss options. Some trips are better suited for non-rider participants than others.
